Welcome to the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority (JMBA) Web site. JMBA was constituted to oversee the construction of the Jamuna Bridge, which has since been renamed by a decision of the National Parliament as Bangabandhu Bridge after the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This site is primarily about the Bangabandhu Bridge, Bangladesh's largest infrastructure development.

  Bangabandhu Bridge
The Bangabandhu Bridge is currently the 11th longest bridge in the world, according to available information, and provides the first fixed crossing of the Jamuna River linking eastern and northwestern parts of Bangladesh.  The location of the bridge is shown on the map alongside. It crosses the Jamuna River (the main channel of the Brahmaputra River in Bangladesh) from Bhuapur on the East Bank to Sirajganj on the West.
The bridge is approximately 110 km northwest of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, and a network of new and improved access roads is being developed to provide for the significant growth in traffic that the bridge will promote.  Construction work commenced in October 1994 and the bridge will be open to traffic from 23 June, 1998 .

In addition to two carriageways with two lanes each for road transport, the bridge also carries a dual gauge (metre gauge and broad gauge) rail track, a 750 mm diametre natural gas pipeline and a 230 kV electricity transmission line  across the river. Fibre optic telecommunications link shall also be installed in future.

In fact, the Bangabandhu Bridge itself is only one part of the whole project. Extensive River Training Works were necessary to tame the mighty Jamuna River. Two totally new  Approach Roads measuring 15.3 km and 14.4 km have also been built on the East and West banks respectively to link the bridge with the existing highway system.  Resettlement and Environmental Programmes continue to be an important part of the whole development.
