Bangabandhu Bridge

The Approach Roads

Approach Roads

Access to the bridge is provided by approach roads of approximately 15 km on each side of the river, constructed as part of the project. The road construction consists of capping layers, sub-base, road base and bituminous pavements laid on embankments.

Within the reclaimed areas at the bridge ends the embankments are formed from dredged sand. Elsewhere, local borrow material has been used for embankment construction.

As the flat land over which the approach roads are constructed is subject to annual flooding, reinforced concrete structures are provided to allow openings through the road embankment permitting equalisation and overland drainage of flood water. Small openings are provided by box culverts of single and twin 5 metre barrels.

Reinforced concrete slab bridges, supported on precast concrete piles provide larger openings of 31, 45 and 66 metres. Extra clearance of 2 metres above the 20-year flood level is provided under certain bridges for navigation by country boats. The rail-over bridges have a clearance of 6 metres.

At each end of the bridge the approach roads lead into the Toll Plazas where the toll collection booths and associated facilities are located. The bridge ends also house administrative and service buildings including police and fire stations.
